Those physically affected by a new wind farm need to get something back. This is why Renewable Sweden launches the incentive concept Wind Value®. An easy way to guarantee economic benefits for landowners, homeowners, associations and entrepreneurs who need help to develop. The package is a comprehensive commitment for project owners who want to build a wind farm.
Many are affected locally when a wind farm is to be built. Local residents and politicians alike are demanding local refunds and a share in the value of the wind. Renewable Sweden has developed the concept Wind Value® This is based on the proposals of the Incentive Inquiry. The work has been done in collaboration with Cecilia Dalman Eek, one of the government's former wind energy coordinators and an expert in the incentive investigation.
Renewable Sweden's concept Wind value® is aimed at developers and is a comprehensive commitment that ensures that affected landowners, local residents and local communities share the value of wind in the establishment of onshore wind energy.
Jeanette Lindeblad, CEO Renewable Sweden and initiator of Vindvärden®:
- With Wind Value™, we want to make it easy for projectors to do the right thing. We provide a package of everything needed to create participation and empowerment among local people. Anyone who lives, owns land or has a small business near a wind farm receives benefits within Wind Value®.
Wind value® contains fixed promises with benchmarks for distances, compensation levels and profit sharing. The concept clarifies which startups should be entitled to compensation from the project and what conditions and other options are available as alternatives. The content is designed according to those affected by the establishment and to meet different local needs and conditions in our elongated country.
Landowners are offered distribution leases and property owners are offered revenue sharing, distributed according to distance from the wind turbines.
The local community in the form of individuals, businesses and municipalities is given the opportunity to apply for a grant from a Wine Value Fund, to which the project allocates funds.
Within the concept there are also some options, such as the possibility of a generally lower electricity price through subsidised membership of a wind farm cooperative.
In order to enable the transition to fossil-free energy and ensure Sweden's electricity prices and competitiveness, new electricity generation needs to be put in place as quickly as possible.
Continued deployment of onshore wind power is singled out as a crucial way forward for rapidly increasing electricity generation. But stronger support among local people is needed for planned projects to come to fruition. The government has for over a year had the proposals of the SOU 2023:18 “Value of Wind” incentive inquiry on its table but has yet to come back with any proposals for action.
- The study “The Value of Wind” proposes that local people be allowed to take part in the value created in a wind farm. Pending action from the government, the entire wind power industry can already use Wind Value® as a simple, clear and guiding practice. At the same time, residents of the surrounding area receive a guarantee that the owner of the park is committed to sharing the economic value of the wind farm, says Cecilia Dalman Eek
